USAID Oceans Announces Selection of Newest Grantees to Leverage eCDT Data for Improved Fisheries Management

In December, USAID Oceans selected two grantees to support its work to leverage eCDT data to improve fisheries management. Two grantees were selected in the program’s Indonesia and the Philippines learning sites, Masyarakat dan Perikanan (MDPI) in Indonesia and Mindanao State University Naawan Foundation for Science and Technology Development, Inc. (MSUNFSTDI) in the Philippines, to undertake data analysis that can be shared with all ASEAN member countries to inform traceability initiatives across the region.

USAID Oceans Advances Regional Readiness for Traceability System Design, Development with Catch Documentation Assessments

Since its launch in 2015, USAID Oceans has worked to engage ASEAN and Coral Triangle Member Countries to advance their capacity to accomplish end-to-end seafood traceability. Over 2017 and 2018, USAID Oceans partnered with Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam to assess their current catch documentation and traceability capabilities and to develop a road map for implementing electronic traceability systems compliant with U.S. and EU market requirements in the near-term and other importing country requirements in the long-term.

USAID Oceans Brings Additional Vessels “Online” in Indonesia CDT Pilot

USAID Oceans conducted a second installment of at-sea data capture technology and provided technical assistance to its First Mover partners in Bitung during October 22- 26, 2018. The installed Pointrek technology is a two-way communication vessel monitoring system (VMS) with real-time catch reporting that enables fishers to capture seafood traceability data directly at its point of catch.

Laos Fishery Experts Hold National Gender Training, Highlighting Importance of Gender Mainstreaming in Fisheries Management

As is common across many countries in Southeast Asia, in Laos women play a key role in the processing and marketing of fish. Recognizing the importance of gender roles and equity in the fisheries sector, in early 2018 the Laos Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF) requested support from USAID Oceans to conduct a National Training Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming in Livestock and Fisheries Management and Development.

USAID Oceans convened its 3rd Annual Regional Technical Working Group (TWG) Planning Workshop, July 16-18, 2018, in  Bangkok, Thailand. Held at the timely juncture of USAID Oceans’ program mid-point, the workshop sought to elicit inputs and guidance from TWG members for the development of a set of regional guidelines on the adoption and use of electronic catch documentation and traceability systems that support sustainable fisheries management, human welfare, and leverage public-private partnerships.
